10 Ways of Funding Yiur Study Abroad Plans

10 Ways of Funding your Plan of Studying Abroad

To quite a number of people who have not maximized the numerous opportunity of studying abroad, funding their study abroad plan is still a great problem. They don’t have the slightest idea of how to fund their study abroad plan.
How would I fund my study abroad plan? Is the question most prospective students ask whenever they are about to take the decision of studying abroad. Most times, they would have put into consideration the programme’s duration whether it is an undergraduate or a post-graduate programme. Would it be for three years or four years? Would it be for a year or two years?
By juxtaposing the cost of the programme vis-à-vis with what they would like to study, finding an alternative source of funding to augment their fees throughout the duration of the programme would be another point of consideration.
So from what I have heard so far, it is only few students that have all the fees for its programme including all other fees handy throughout the duration of the programme. That is having an alternative source of funding for your study abroad plan is sine qua non.
But just how does one goes about this? You may want to know. I have got some gist for you if this is the question on your mind.
1.       Personal Savings: No one who is planning to take the step of studying abroad without having put some money aside for his proposed plan. Have you been thinking of studying abroad? If yes, let me ask you, “How much do you have as your personal savings or how much have you set aside for this? If you do not have any personal savings for your study abroad plan, then I doubt if you are ready to take this all important decision of studying abroad. Yes, you may say, “I don’t need to bother about that or heddle my head about what I have put aside, Daddy or Mummy will take care of that.” That may be true. But will your parents give you all need even when you want to buy some personal effects like: toiletries, clothes, candy, books, shoes, etc? So, if you are in the group of people who are over-dependent, you need to start doing something for yourself today. It begins with personal responsibility of which having a savings account is paramount.
2.       Family and Friends: Your family or friends could help you to realize your nurtured dreams of studying abroad. Many students who come from vacation usually rake a lot of money when they are going back to school. How do they do this? “Uncle, I am back from school, and I’ll be back in a month’s time. “ Then Uncle will say, “That’s great! Just let me know when you are going back maybe I should be able to get you something.” Guess what? By the time he informs, ‘Uncle Thi’s, ‘Auntie That’, he would have got a lot of dough in his pocket. That is just how to get money to make your studying abroad plan come true.
3.       Scholarships: If you are an excellent student, then you need not pay through your nose to study abroad as there are one thousand and one scholarships available, all for grabs. You can either get a partial or full scholarship depending on which of the scholarships you apply for or depending on your performance in SAT, TOEFL or any of the foreign exams that you are required to write. Foundations and organizations like: Pepsi, Coca Cola, TATA, Bill & Melinda Gate foundation, Chevining, OFID, OPEC, Aga Khan,to mention just a few, have a number of scholarships in place for international students. All you need to do is to find out about these scholarship opportunities. You need to also bear in mind that most of the scholarships offers are limited and also have application deadline. They are also awarded to eligible students.
4.       Grants: Getting a College grant is another avenue of funding your study abroad plan. It may interest you to know that you can get a yearly grant which can take you throughout your programme of study. Even there are departmental grants that you can access while studying. Most colleges and universities have put this in place to encourage students to pursue their undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. There are also grants for research and others. All you need to do is to find out. Your colleges/university may also have this in place without you knowing about it.
5.       Loan: Another way of funding your study abroad plan is to apply for study loan. It is most come in the United States, but as an international student, you can also get a study loan especially if you have a co-signer. As a student, you can apply for loan to pay your tuition fee and other expenses like: board, books and feeding. But the reality is that many students do not know that are study loans available for international students.  Even in some banks in Nigeria, you can open a Study Abroad Account and then loan money for your programme.
6.       Tuition Waiver: Have you heard about a tuition waiver before. I am afraid it might sound strange to most international student from Nigeria planning to study abroad. Tuition Waiver is when a school waives (removes) your tuition fee on the ground that you are not able to pay your school fees. It could be that you are indigent student and the school (university or college) have considered you to be a preferred student of their school after applying to their school. Such student might have notified the school in writing that s/he cannot afford to pay the school fees. The school as part of the consideration to encourage such applicant might decide to waive the school fees and just ask the student in question to pay for other fees like: board (accommodation), books and feeding. Tuition waiver is one of the rare cases of scholarship opportunity, but they exist. The only thing is that it is strictly based on student’s requests or the school’s policy. Who know, you could be one of the lucky students to get a tuition fee waiver if you have great need and the school you are applying to consider you so.
7.       Study Now, Pay Later: This sounds interesting and unbelieving. Yes, you can study abroad and pay later. In some European universities, international students who could not pay their fees can have access to study, while they pay for their fees upon graduation. In this programme, the candidate would be given work after finishing the programme in the university, and would then be able to pay their fees while working upon graduation. This plan is put in place by these universities in order not to deprive those who want to study abroad, but do not have the opportunity to do because of fees.
8.       Work Abroad: It is legal for international students to work abroad while studying. While studying, international students have the opportunity to work abroad for some specified number of hours per week and earn extra cash. Many prudent and industrious students are able to work hard and save so much to take care of their personal needs and would not have to bother their parents sending money to them.
9.       Fellowships: Fellowships is a programme of short duration for some professionals and scholars. During your fellowship, you will have opportunity to meet students and scholars from diverse backgrounds and culture and network, share ideas and experiences. This programme is usually an enriching one. There are many fellowship opportunities every year with all expense paid. One of them is the US Young Scholars programme. This World Bank Junior Scholar is another. There are other fellowships too depending on your course of study and discipline.
10.   Study abroad free: The most interesting thing about studying abroad is that one can study abroad free as there are many free universities abroad. Only few people know this though.
You can maximize any of these opportunities to realize your dream of studying
